Looking for a simple and delicious snack to celebrate the spooky season?  Sweet, salty, crunchy and chewy – this Halloween snack mix has it all!  Easy enough for kids to make, this no-bake party snack is ready in just 5 minutes.  This pantry-friendly mix is made with store-bought treats that can be bought in advance and kept on hand, so you can wow drop-in guests at a moment’s notice.  Chicago mix popcorn, pretzels, chocolate-covered caramels and candy-coated peanut butter treats all come together in an unlikely combination that is pure festive, sweet-and-salty, perfection.   The simplicity of this recipe also makes it a winner for Halloween night, when you’re already busy with costumes, decorations and trick-or-treaters at your door.   Throw everything in a big bowl and mix, or let the kids do it, since no chopping or cooking is involved.  Great for parties, Monster Munch Halloween Snack Mix makes about 14 cups so there’s plenty to share – which is good, because once you take a bite of a pretzel with a peanut butter candy, or popcorn with a chocolate covered caramel, you won’t be able to resist going back for more (and more, and more!).  Consider making a double batch because this snack mix disappears faster than a witch can fly!

What goes in Monster Munch Halloween Snack Mix?

This recipe couldn’t be simpler!  You’ll need:

  • Chicago Mix Popcorn:  This store-bought snack combines salty cheese flavoured popcorn with buttery sweet caramel corn.  Although it may sound unlikely at first, the combination of these two types of popcorn make for a perfect balance of salty, sweet and savoury.  Find Chicago Mix in the snack aisle of your grocery store, from popcorn purveyors or online.
  • Plain Salted Pretzel Twists:  This Monster Munch Mix is a delicious combination of salty and sweet flavours, and plain pretzel twists deliver on the salty side of the equation.  Find salted pretzels in the snack section of almost all grocery stores.
  • Chocolate or Peanut Butter Covered Pretzel Twists: I found chocolate AND peanut butter covered pretzels at my local grocery store (made by Reece’s, makers of the famous peanut butter cups).  If you can’t track those down, use chocolate covered pretzels.
  • Candy Covered Peanut Butter Candies:  I used Reece’s Pieces candy, which just so happen to come in Halloween themed colours of orange, yellow and brown, making them the perfect choice for this snack mix.
  • Mini Chocolate Covered Caramels:  Mini Rolo chocolate covered caramels add some bite-size chewiness to this Monster Mix.  If Mini Rolos aren’t available in your area, use any other kind of chocolate covered soft caramels for a similar effect.

This Halloween snack is perfect for munching on cool October evenings, while watching spooky movies on the couch. Or, pack it up and take it along to add Halloween fun to potluck parties.   It is equally at home on a Halloween party dessert buffet, along with Old Fashioned Baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts and a Giant Deep Dish Chocolate Chip Cookie.  Loved by kids and adults alike, this mix can be packaged up and sent out with a trick-or-treating crew to keep energies up along the route.

DRINK PAIRINGS

Bourbon or Scotch Whisky are good choices to pair with the sweet, caramel flavours in this mix.   The salty ingredients will bring out the flavours of the whisky, making the enhancement reciprocal.  Wine isn’t the best match for this mix, but if you were set on it I’d suggest a Merlot.  Looking for a non-alcoholic beverage?  Hot chocolate is always a cozy choice and chilled root beer is refreshing.

GIFTABLE

This Halloween-themed snack mix makes a welcome hostess gift or festive homemade present for friends and family.  Wrap it up in a cellophane bag and tie with a Halloween themed ribbon, or buy a reusable glass jar with a tight fitting lid to keep it extra fresh.  Don’t forget to include a gift fun tag to let them know it’s from you!

RECIPE NOTES

  • Popcorn looses its crispness over time, so Monster Munch Mix is best eaten within a few hours.  Keep any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.  It may loose a bit of crunch over time, but will still be delicious.
